Honda NSX (NA1/NA2) & NSX-R for Sale: Buy & Import from Japan

Looking for a Honda NSX for sale to import from Japan to the USA? Mirai sources, inspects and ships them to U.S. buyers with export and 25-year import handling. Honda NSX buyers in the United States need more than a model-year label. This guide separates the NA1/C30A and NA2/C32B identities, the 1992–1995 and 2002 NSX-R generations, model-specific weak points, condition evidence, federal age timing and the destination-state handoff.

Honda NSX buyer overview

Start with factory identity, then make condition and import decisions around the actual vehicle.

Honda launched the first NSX in September 1990 around a mid-engine, rear-drive layout, an all-aluminum monocoque and aluminum double-wishbone suspension. The current Honda C30A technical archive identifies the 2,977 cc DOHC VTEC V6 as an NSX-exclusive engine with titanium connecting rods and a manual-car 280 PS reference.

The chassis code and engine must be read together. NA1 denotes the 3.0-liter C30A family; Honda’s February 1997 factbook introduces the 3,179 cc C32B and six-speed manual, the combination associated with NA2. Later automatic cars can remain NA1/C30A, so a late year alone does not prove NA2.

Honda’s NSX history records the first NSX-R in 1992. The separate May 2002 NSX-R factbook describes the later NA2/C32B car at 1,270 kg without air conditioning, with carbon-fiber parts and a six-speed manual. Those are different collector identities and the U.S. age result differs sharply in 2026.

Identity, body and engine choices

A generation nickname cannot replace the full chassis and model record.

Buyer reference

NA1 / C30A

The 3.0-liter identity covers the original five-speed manual and four-speed automatic line. A 1997-or-later automatic does not automatically become NA2.

Buyer reference

NA2 / C32B

Honda’s 1997 change joins the 3.2-liter C32B to the six-speed manual. The model plate, engine and gearbox must support the claim.

Buyer reference

NSX-R

Treat 1992–1995 NA1 and 2002–2005 NA2 R claims as separate. Seats, steering, suspension, body panels, deleted equipment and the document trail need specialist authentication.

Claims that change value need evidence

Match the stamped chassis, model plate, Japanese export certificate, translation, manufacture date, body and engine. Treat rare grade, factory turbo, diesel conversion and special-market claims as unproven until the records and hardware agree.

Honda NSX known problems and exact checks

Use symptoms and component evidence to test the weak points that matter on this model.

Model-specific check

Early manual-transmission snap-ring case

American Honda bulletin 93-010 documents a broken countershaft-bearing snap ring on affected 1991–1992 Acura NSX transmissions. Record the transmission number, inspect for case-history evidence, and road-test for abnormal shift or case noise; do not apply a U.S. VIN range blindly to a JDM car.

Model-specific check

Window regulator spool binding

American Honda bulletin 93-004 identifies a binding white plastic spool behind a popping window on 1991–1993 Acura NSX cars. Cycle both windows repeatedly, listen for popping, check glass alignment and inspect regulator repair evidence before the cable or guide fails.

Model-specific check

Aluminum collision repair and galvanic damage

Honda’s 1990 body record explains that aluminum required dedicated welding methods and isolation from dissimilar metals. Measure panel gaps and pickup points, inspect seams and fasteners for incorrect repairs or galvanic reaction, and request invoices from an aluminum-capable repairer.

Model-specific check

Timing, cooling and hose history

An old low-mileage car can still have time-expired belts, hoses and seals. Require dated timing-belt and water-pump evidence, pressure-test the long mid-engine cooling circuit, inspect every hose connection and verify stable temperature from cold start through a hot road test.

Model-specific check

ABS modulator and hydraulic condition

The live Acura schedule specifically calls for inspection of ABS hoses, lines, modulator damage and leakage. Check the warning lamp sequence, listen for repeated pump cycling, scan or diagnose stored faults, inspect the modulator and confirm brake-fluid service rather than accepting a cleared light.

Honda NSX value and market context

Value follows the evidence behind the specification and condition, not the model name alone.

Value driver

Factory grade and specification

NA1 versus NA2, manual versus automatic, coupe versus NSX-T, Type S and a documented NSX-R identity create different comparison groups. Grade claims need model-plate, export-record and hardware support.

Value driver

Originality and matching identity

An original-type C30A or C32B, correct transmission, factory panels, trim and R-specific hardware are easier to benchmark. Engine swaps, replicas and converted roofs need separate evidence and workmanship review.

Value driver

Mileage with evidence

Lower indicated kilometers help only when auction history, service records, wear and cluster continuity agree. Long storage can add belt, seal, cooling and hydraulic work even when mileage is low.

Value driver

Documented history

Auction sheets, ownership continuity, service invoices, timing-belt evidence and aluminum collision-repair records reduce uncertainty. For an NSX-R, period records and component provenance carry unusual weight.

Value driver

Condition tier

A preserved original or correctly restored car sits above a sound driver; modified track cars and projects need their own comparison set. Straight aluminum structure, complete trim and mechanical health outrank surface gloss.

How to compare candidates

Compare like-for-like vehicles by factory identity, originality, mileage evidence, documented history and condition tier. Auction grade can help frame the review, but the sheet, photographs, inspection and repair history explain why two apparently similar vehicles can belong in different value bands. This guide does not publish a fixed price because timing, specification, condition and transaction terms move independently.

Buyer inspection priorities

Turn the listing into a chassis-specific inspection brief with photographs, measurements, tests and a road report.

Evidence to request

Give the inspector the claimed model, engine, body, modifications, intended use and U.S. destination. Ask for the following evidence around that exact candidate.

  • Photograph the front and rear structure, subframes, suspension pickup points, floor and panel seams; measure alignment and identify any non-factory welding or dissimilar-metal fasteners.
  • Verify chassis code, engine stamping, transmission identity, model plate, export certificate and grade-specific hardware; an NSX-R claim needs a dedicated provenance file.
  • Cold-start the V6, record idle, oil pressure or warning behavior, smoke and valvetrain noise, then test VTEC operation, cooling stability and hot restart without chasing a generic compression number alone.
  • For early manuals, record the transmission number and repair history, then road-test every gear under load and overrun for snap-ring-related or synchronizer symptoms.
  • Cycle both windows, climate controls, gauges, pop-up lamps, ABS, power steering where fitted and every cabin switch; photograph warning-lamp behavior at key-on and after start.
  • Inspect timing-belt and water-pump invoices, coolant hoses, radiator, expansion tank, clutch hydraulics, brake lines, ABS modulator, dampers, bushings, tires and evidence of track use.

Cross-model context

Versus Toyota Supra MK4

The Supra offers front-engine 2JZ tuning culture and a different cabin and cargo profile. The NSX emphasizes low mass, mid-engine balance and aluminum structure, which makes collision history more consequential.

Cross-model context

Versus Skyline GT-R

R32 and R33 GT-R buyers get turbocharged all-wheel-drive complexity and broader modification history. The NSX brief centers on rear-drive response, body integrity and original lightweight hardware.

Cross-model context

Versus Honda Beat

The Beat shares a mid-engine, rear-drive idea at kei scale and far lower output. It is a simpler fun-car proposition, while the NSX carries more expensive structure, provenance and specialist-service exposure.

U.S. import, title and state planning

Federal age, EPA configuration, customs paperwork and state registration are connected steps.

NHTSA says a vehicle at least 25 years old may enter without conforming to FMVSS under Box 1 of the HS-7 declaration. The period runs from the actual manufacture date. Cars built through August 2001 are clearly past 25 years on the review date, September 2001 needs the exact day, and later examples are still date-sensitive. The 1992–1995 NA1 NSX-R is age-open; the 2002 NA2 NSX-R is not yet eligible through age alone.

EPA’s over-21 provision calls for the engine to be the same model and configuration as originally installed. A swap, conversion or uncertain engine identity can change the route. CBP still needs the correct ownership, transport and federal declaration file.

The destination state controls title, VIN inspection, emissions, equipment, registration and insurance. Start with USA.gov’s official state motor-vehicle directory. California direct imports deserve early review because federal age eligibility alone does not establish state registration.

Honda NSX frequently asked questions

Direct answers for U.S. buyers evaluating this vehicle family.

What is the difference between NA1 and NA2 Honda NSX cars?

NA1 identifies the 3.0-liter C30A family. NA2 identifies the 3.2-liter C32B six-speed manual family introduced for 1997; later four-speed automatics can remain NA1.

Did every NA2 Honda NSX have the C32B engine?

The factory NA2 identity is tied to the 3.2-liter C32B and six-speed manual. A claimed NA2 automatic or C30A car needs its chassis, plate and records rechecked.

Is every first-generation Honda NSX now 25-year eligible?

No. Cars through August 2001 are clearly over 25 years old on September 14, 2026; September needs the exact day, and later 2001–2005 cars are not all open.

Can I import a 2002 NSX-R under the 25-year rule now?

No, not through age alone in September 2026. The 2002 NA2 NSX-R has not reached its 25th manufacture anniversary.

What is the early NSX transmission snap-ring issue?

American Honda bulletin 93-010 covers a broken countershaft-bearing snap ring on affected U.S. 1991–1992 cars. A JDM candidate needs its own transmission number and history reviewed.

What should I check on NSX power windows?

Cycle each window repeatedly and listen for a pop, binding or uneven glass movement. Bulletin 93-004 identifies binding at the regulator spool on 1991–1993 Acura NSX cars.

Why does aluminum collision history matter on an NSX?

The monocoque, subframes and much of the suspension use aluminum. Incorrect joining, distorted pickup points or contact with dissimilar metals can make an apparently tidy repair expensive to correct.

How do I authenticate an NSX-R?

Match the chassis, model plate, export certificate and period records, then inventory the correct seats, steering, suspension, body, deleted equipment and other generation-specific hardware.

Does federal age eligibility guarantee a state title?

No. The destination state separately controls title, VIN inspection, emissions, equipment, registration and insurance.

Can a 25-year-old JDM NSX be registered in California?

Age alone does not establish California registration. Review the exact direct-import and emissions path early under the current state process.

Can an engine-swapped NSX use the EPA over-21 provision?

Generally no. EPA ties that provision to the same engine model and configuration originally installed, so a swap needs route-specific review.

How can I search Honda NSX cars in Mirai’s Auction Portal?

Ask Mirai on WhatsApp for exclusive customer access. The portal covers major auctions across Japan and can filter candidates by NA1 or NA2 identity, grade, age, mileage, condition, documents and U.S. destination brief.
