Two very different Sambar Truck families share one name
The deciding question is not simply “Which year?” It is whether the truck is a Subaru-built rear-engine model or a Daihatsu-built OEM model.
Subaru launched the Sambar Truck in February 1961 with a rear-mounted engine, rear-wheel drive and a space-efficient cab-over body. Subaru’s own 40-year history highlights the layout, four-wheel independent suspension and the arrival of 4WD in November 1980. The 1990 generation then introduced the 658cc four-cylinder EN07 family.
Subaru ended in-house kei-vehicle production in February 2012. The Sambar name returned in April on a Daihatsu Hijet-based OEM truck. That change replaced the classic rear-engine Subaru platform with a front-engine/rear-drive base, a three-cylinder KF engine family and different chassis codes.
This guide covers trucks only. It excludes Sambar vans, Dias passenger/cargo models and open-deck van derivatives. Standard three-way beds, Grand Cab trucks, dumps, panel bodies and other documented special-purpose trucks remain in scope.
“Sambar” does not always mean Subaru mechanicals
KS3/KS4 and TT1/TT2 are Subaru-built rear-engine trucks. S201J/S211J and S500J/S510J are Daihatsu OEM trucks. Parts, engine access, suspension, 4WD controls and trim logic differ substantially across that boundary.

Sambar engine lineage
The most important mechanical break is the change from Subaru’s rear-mounted engines to the Daihatsu KF three-cylinder in 2012.
356cc two-stroke twins
Air-cooled in the 1961 original and water-cooled in the 1973 “Goriki” era. Historic engine codes and specifications require vehicle-specific records.
EK-series four-stroke twins
The Sambar 5 moved to 500cc in 1976, followed by 550cc development. The 1982 generation remained a water-cooled four-stroke before the four-cylinder era.
EN07 · 658cc inline-four
Subaru’s defining KS/TT engine family. Naturally aspirated versions are common; selected TT-series TC grades used a supercharger.
KF · 658cc inline-three
Daihatsu-built OEM engine family used by S201J/S211J and S500J/S510J. Current 2026 specifications use a naturally aspirated DOHC version.
KS4 is the classic age-eligible 4WD target
The 1990–1999 KS4 combines Subaru’s rear-engine layout, independent suspension, 658cc EN07 four-cylinder and four-wheel drive. Equipment varies sharply, so do not infer A/C, power steering, gearing or differential hardware from the code alone.

Subaru’s March 2026 equipment sheet lists manual A/C on all current grades. Current CVT 4WD uses electronic 2WD/4WD AUTO/4WD LOCK modes; current 4WD MT uses a mechanical selectable system, with Hi-Lo on TA, TC and Grand Cab.
TB
The long-running base grade. Older TB examples can be sparse; current TB has power steering, A/C and modern safety equipment.
TC
Typically the better-equipped working grade. In the TT era, TC also carried selected high-roof and supercharged variants.
TA
Current 4WD-only work grade with rear four-leaf springs, Super Differential Lock and Hi-Lo on the 5MT version.
Grand Cab
Current extended-cabin choice with seat slide/recline and behind-seat space; published bed length is shorter than the standard cab.
TC Supercharger
A genuine selected TT-series grade. Prove the engine hardware, service history and exact drivetrain rather than buying from a badge claim.

Current S510J 4WD equipment is unusually clear
Subaru’s March 2026 publications identify 5MT and CVT, manual A/C across the range, electronic three-mode 4WD on CVT trucks, and Super Differential Lock on TA, TC and Grand Cab 4WD versions.
