Japan export internship work in a real cross-border business

Mirai sources used Japanese vehicles through auctions and coordinates documents and shipping for overseas buyers.

Mirai currently serves buyers in the USA. Interns can see how buyer briefs, auction records, vehicle identity, quotations, shipping choices and export paperwork connect, while assisting staff under supervision. Read about Mirai and how its export process works.

Two supervised internship tracks

Example learning tasks, to be matched to the institution’s curriculum and an agreed placement plan.

1. International Sales & Export Operations

  • Assist with buyer-enquiry summaries and quotation preparation; learn to distinguish a request, an estimate and a confirmed order.
  • Research candidate vehicles and auction-sheet evidence with staff. The Mirai Auction Portal is Mirai’s internal, customer-only research tool; customer access is granted after inquiry; it covers vehicles from major auctions across Japan and filters candidates around a U.S. buyer brief, including age, identity, engine, documents, condition and destination-state needs. It is not public inventory or a guarantee of entry or registration.
  • Research U.S. federal and destination-state requirements using Mirai’s USA import guide and state-by-state guide hub as starting points; confirm the applicable authority source for each buyer brief.
  • Follow RoRo or container booking, loading and bill-of-lading (B/L) coordination with staff.
  • Map vehicle deregistration for export (輸出抹消仮登録) or planned-export notice, the resulting certificate, export declaration to Japan Customs, and any buyer-requested pre-shipment inspection. Official process sources below.

Learning outcome: trace a buyer brief through sourcing, evidence, shipping and documentary handoff without making an independent compliance or purchasing decision.

2. Administration & Documentation

  • Assist with controlled filing, version checks and document handoff.
  • Organise invoice and payment records for staff reconciliation.
  • Check vehicle identifiers across the registration certificate (車検証), export certificate, invoice and shipping record; flag mismatches for staff.
  • Support data entry and Japanese–English correspondence or translation drafts for review.
  • Learn how a licensed secondhand dealer records relevant transactions under the Secondhand Articles Dealer Act (古物営業法); staff retain responsibility for identity checks and required records. NPA source below.

Learning outcome: understand document accuracy, record traceability and escalation in a regulated export office.

How an export candidate is evaluated

Sales-track interns learn to organise evidence for staff review, rather than assign a vehicle price independently.

Grade and specificationCompare auction grade, trim and equipment with the buyer brief.
Originality and identityCheck chassis and document identifiers; flag mismatches.
Mileage evidenceCompare readings and auction notes with available records.
Documented historyOrganise service and ownership records where supplied.
Condition tierSeparate preserved, restored, modified and project vehicles in a like-for-like review.

Auction timing, evidence and vehicle condition can change a quotation.

Information for international and Japan-based students

Use the applicable official route with your institution before agreeing a placement. This is a factual summary, not an eligibility decision.

Students of overseas universities. Japan’s Immigration Services Agency says a remunerated internship that forms part of an overseas university curriculum can use Designated Activities (Notice No. 9) when its conditions are met, including a host–university agreement, study relevance and a duration no longer than one year and no more than half the degree period in total. The agency lists different routes for unpaid placements according to stay length. ISA internship guidance, current page accessed 2 October 2026; ISA application documents, accessed 2 October 2026.

Students already in Japan on Student status. Remunerated activity ordinarily needs permission for activities outside status (資格外活動許可). The general permission is normally capped at 28 hours per week, with a separate vacation rule; an internship over 28 hours may need individual permission. ISA internship guidance, accessed 2 October 2026. Confirm the actual permission and study schedule before setting hours.

Labour status. Japan’s MHLW looks at whether work is under another party’s direction and whether payment is consideration for that work; the name “internship” alone does not decide worker status. This affects pay and labour protections for a defined placement. MHLW worker-status guidance, accessed 2 October 2026.

Japanese institutions. The MEXT/MHLW/METI three-ministry guidance revised 13 June 2022 distinguishes four types of career-development activity. A Type 3 internship requires actual work experience, employee guidance and feedback plus duration, timing and disclosure conditions. Mirai’s placement type cannot be assigned until its terms and institution are agreed. MEXT three-ministry guidance, 13 June 2022 revision.

Immigration and host-company role

Mirai signs university internship agreements, but does not currently sponsor visas for overseas students. Overseas students participate remotely. Students in Japan and their institutions must confirm the applicable status and work permission before an on-site or hybrid placement.

Who the tracks suit

Curriculum fit matters more than a generic title.

International business, trade, logistics, Japanese studies, business administration and automotive programmes can use the tracks to frame supervised learning in buyer communication, source assessment, export workflow, document accuracy and bilingual office practice. Applicants must be 18+ and enrolled in university, college or vocational school, or within 12 months of graduation. Track language levels are listed above. Japanese-language school enrolment alone is not an eligible study level.

Students who found this page directly should ask their institution’s career office to contact Mirai. If there is no institution contact, ask us directly on WhatsApp.
