Nissan Skyline R32 GT-R for Sale: Buy & Import from Japan
Looking for a Nissan Skyline R32 GT-R for sale to import from Japan to the USA? Mirai sources, inspects and ships them to U.S. buyers with export and 25-year import handling. The Nissan Skyline R32 GT-R is the BNR32-code, twin-turbo RB26DETT and ATTESA E-TS all-wheel-drive model sold from 1989. For a U.S. buyer, every original-production example is now beyond the federal 25-year threshold; the harder questions are identity, condition, engine configuration, documentation and the destination state.

Different R32 or R33 codes describe different Skyline models.
2,568 cc twin-turbo inline-six.
353 N·m factory torque.
Manufacture date and engine configuration still need evidence.
Nissan Skyline R32 GT-R overview for U.S. buyers
What defines this generation and why condition matters more than reputation.
Nissan launched the R32 Skyline in May 1989 and the GT-R in August. Its compact body, electronically controlled torque-split all-wheel drive and RB26DETT were engineered around Group A competition. Nissan’s heritage record credits the model with 29 consecutive Japanese Touring Car Championship wins from 1990 through 1993. That racing record explains demand, but it also means many road cars have accumulated modifications or hard use.
NISMO records the R32 GT-R sales period as August 1989 through January 1995. All cars from that sales period are old enough for the NHTSA 25-year route as of this guide’s review date.
The right buying sequence is simple: establish identity, map structure and corrosion, test the RB26 and driveline, audit modifications, then assemble a federal and state document plan. Market rarity should not reverse that order.
Scope boundary
This guide covers the GT-R generation and its U.S. import path. Mirai’s JDM sports-car hub owns broader category comparisons, while the auction-sheet guide explains grades and inspector notes.
R32 GT-R specs and factory reference
Nissan heritage data gives a baseline for screening claims; an individual car may differ through grade, year or modification.

Identity, grades and provenance
The chassis record carries more weight than exterior parts or a listing title.
A Skyline badge or an R32 body shape does not establish GT-R identity. Start with the BNR32 chassis code and align the chassis stamping, model plate, Japanese export certificate, translation and ownership trail. HCR32 and other R32 variants can be desirable Skylines, but they are different vehicles and should not be priced or represented as GT-Rs.
Standard GT-R
The baseline BNR32 reference. Judge it on structural integrity, RB26 health, driveline operation and documented history.
NISMO and N1
Competition-oriented or homologation-linked names attract premiums. Provenance and correct specification matter more than a seller label.
V-Spec and V-Spec II
Nissan says the V-Spec option began in February 1993 with Brembo brakes and 17-inch BBS wheels. Verify the individual car’s records and fitted hardware.
Grade claims need a complete chain
R32 trim names are frequently used loosely in listings. A high-value grade needs documentary and physical evidence. Ask for clear photographs of the stamping and model plate plus the export certificate and translation; compare these before valuing rarity.
Buyer inspection priorities
Auction grades are screening inputs. A targeted physical and mechanical inspection answers the expensive questions.

Inspection brief
Give the inspector the chassis identity, claimed grade, intended use and known changes. Request evidence that can be reviewed remotely.
- Map corrosion at the front strut towers, firewall seams, sills, rear arches, floor and suspension mounting points.
- Measure compression and leak-down, inspect cooling and oil systems, and look for turbo smoke or boost-control shortcuts.
- Road-test the five-speed for second- and third-gear synchro wear, clutch behavior, transfer noise and differential noise.
- Check ATTESA E-TS and HICAS warning behavior, fluid leaks, sensors and evidence of crude system deletes.
- Compare paint depth and panel seams; inspect rails, aprons, trunk floor and suspension pickup points for repaired impact damage.
- Inventory ECU, fuel, turbo, exhaust, brake and suspension changes, then require invoices and a coherent tune or restoration record.
U.S. import, title and state planning
Federal age eligibility opens a route; the document file and destination state determine the remaining work.
NHTSA says a vehicle at least 25 years old may be imported without conforming to FMVSS, using Box 1 on the HS-7 declaration. The 25-year period runs from the actual manufacture date, and evidence is needed when the vehicle lacks a qualifying certification label. All factory-production examples covered here have passed that age threshold.
EPA’s current over-21 provision is narrower than age alone: the engine must be the same model and configuration as originally installed. A different engine, uncertain block or major emissions change deserves a specialist route review before shipping. CBP entry still needs the correct ownership, transport and federal declaration paperwork.
Registration is handled by the destination state. Use the official agency reached through USA.gov’s state motor-vehicle directory for the current title, VIN inspection, tax and emissions steps. California direct-import gasoline rules deserve early attention because a federally eligible car may still face a difficult state process.

Nissan Skyline R32 GT-R frequently asked questions
Direct answers for U.S. buyers comparing and importing an individual car.
Is a Nissan Skyline R32 GT-R legal to import into the United States?
Yes. All original R32 GT-R production is now more than 25 years old for NHTSA purposes. EPA engine-configuration rules, customs entry and state title or emissions requirements still apply.
Is every R32 Skyline a GT-R?
No. A genuine R32 GT-R carries the BNR32 chassis code. HCR32 and other R32 codes identify different Skyline variants.
What engine is in the R32 GT-R?
Nissan specifies the 2,568 cc RB26DETT inline-six with twin turbochargers.
How much power did the R32 GT-R make?
Nissan’s 1989 heritage specification lists 206 kW or 280 PS at 6,800 rpm and 353 N·m at 4,400 rpm.
Is the R32 GT-R all-wheel drive?
Yes. It uses Nissan’s ATTESA E-TS electronically controlled torque-split all-wheel-drive system.
What distinguishes an R32 V-Spec?
Nissan says the V-Spec option began in February 1993 and added Brembo brakes and 17-inch BBS wheels. Records and hardware should agree on the car being evaluated.
Is a NISMO or N1 automatically the best R32 to buy?
No. Rarity cannot compensate for corrosion, repaired structure, poor mechanical condition or weak provenance. Buy the strongest verified example for the intended use.
Can an engine swap affect the EPA import route?
Yes. EPA’s over-21 provision depends on the engine being the same model and configuration as originally installed, so a swap or uncertain engine identity needs specialist review.
Which documents should come with an imported R32 GT-R?
Look for the Japanese export certificate and translation, manufacture-date evidence, continuous ownership records, customs forms, invoice, bill of lading and any auction or service records.
Where does an R32 GT-R most need inspection?
Prioritize the strut towers, sills, rear arches, floor, rails and suspension mounts, followed by compression, leak-down, cooling, turbo, gearbox, ATTESA and HICAS checks.
Can a federally eligible R32 GT-R be registered in California?
Federal age eligibility does not guarantee California registration. The state’s direct-import and emissions process can make gasoline imports difficult, so review the exact car and route with the current California program.
Can Mirai Trading source and inspect an R32 GT-R?
Yes. Mirai can search Japanese inventory, review auction information, arrange targeted inspection and organize export documents around the buyer’s specification and U.S. destination.
