Guide status describes Mirai’s editorial coverage, not current auction stock. The portal can search relevant eligible variants even while a model guide is still being prepared.

Choose by job, not just badge

The right candidate starts with the use you will actually have in the United States. Factory fitment varies by year and market.

This is an editorial starting point, not a universal performance ranking. A well-documented ordinary vehicle can be a better buy than a poorly repaired high-grade one.

What drives value

Value rises with verifiable factory specification, clean structural condition, honest mileage, matching identity records and documented maintenance. A rare trim or desirable diesel earns its premium only when the chassis, engine, grade and paperwork support it. Repaint, corrosion repairs, heavy lifts and missing records change the condition tier; none can be reduced to a fixed hub-wide price.

Inspection brief

Frame, chassis identity and factory 4WD hardware.

Destination note

State title and registration are separate from federal entry.

Inspect the candidate as a whole vehicle

Ask for the auction sheet, chassis and engine stamps, export certificate and photographs that let an inspector check the expensive areas.

Identity and history

Match the chassis stamping, model plate, engine and export document. Compare claimed mileage with inspection history and service records.

Structure and driveline

Examine frame rails, crossmembers, mounts, floor seams and underbody coatings. Test transfer-case modes, hubs, axle locks and steering without assuming equipment from a badge.

Modification quality

Record lift components, tire size, suspension geometry, body changes and engine swaps. Separate reversible accessories from changes that alter identity, emissions or safe operation.

Read the auction sheet, then verify it

USA import route: four checks before a bid

The federal route, emissions route, customs file and destination state each ask different questions.

  1. Establish age. NHTSA’s current import FAQ (accessed September 26, 2026) says the 25-year FMVSS exemption runs from the individual manufacture date; an age-eligible vehicle is declared under HS-7 Box 1. A model-year label alone is not enough.
  2. Establish engine configuration. EPA’s importing guidance, updated September 1, 2026, describes an over-21 provision tied to the same engine model and configuration originally installed. Swapped vehicles need separate route review.
  3. Assemble entry evidence. CBP’s automobile guide, published February 13, 2026, points importers to EPA Form 3520-1 and DOT HS-7. Keep the export and ownership record aligned with the stamped identity.
  4. Plan state title. Use the current state motor-vehicle agency instructions. California DMV’s direct-import page is a clear example: it requires specific ownership and customs evidence and warns that many nonconforming diesel imports cannot be registered there.

Mirai Auction Portal: filter Japanese 4x4s across Japan

Access is available exclusively to Mirai customers after inquiry. The portal covers vehicles from major auctions across Japan and lets Mirai prepare a robust filtered search for your U.S. brief.

Start with model family, chassis, factory engine and manufacture window. Then narrow by mileage, grade, repair history, drivetrain, modifications, documents and the inspection questions relevant to your destination state. You can compare candidates and send Mirai the lots you want reviewed.

What “filtered for USA” means

Mirai screens around age, identity, original engine configuration, document completeness, condition and your state plan. It does not mean every displayed lot is federally admissible, registrable or owned by Mirai.

Japanese 4×4 buying and import FAQs

Direct answers to the questions that change a buyer’s shortlist.

Which Japanese 4x4s have full Mirai guides now?

All of them. Mirai has full guides for the Land Cruiser 40, 60, 70, 80, 100 and Prado 90, the Nissan Patrol Y60/Y61, Toyota Hilux, Mitsubishi Pajero, Pajero Evolution and Pajero Mini, the Mitsubishi Delica 4WD and Toyota Hiace 4WD, plus the 4WD-capable Mazda Bongo and Nissan Elgrand vans.

Can Mirai help find a Pajero or Delica before its guide is published?

Yes. Ask Mirai to filter auction candidates by generation, chassis, engine, build month, condition and destination state. The absence of a model guide does not mean a vehicle is available or eligible.

Are all Land Cruiser 70 Series vehicles old enough for the U.S. 25-year route?

No. The 70 Series spans many production years. A candidate must be at least 25 years old from its actual manufacture date when it enters the United States.

Is the Land Cruiser 100 Series automatically age-eligible?

No. Toyota launched the 100 Series in January 1998, but each later vehicle needs its own manufacture-date screen. A model name alone does not establish eligibility.

Does a 25-year-old Japanese 4×4 automatically receive a state title?

No. Federal entry and state title or registration are separate steps. The destination agency controls its documents, inspections, emissions and road-use rules.

Can a direct-import diesel 4×4 be registered in California?

Generally no if it was not originally built to meet the required U.S. and California standards. California DMV says diesel direct imports cannot currently be converted to California emissions standards; review the exact vehicle with the state agency.

Can an engine-swapped 4×4 use EPA’s over-21 provision?

Generally no. EPA says the engine must be the same model and configuration as originally installed for that provision; a swap needs a different, vehicle-specific route review.

Do all Hilux and Delica variants have four-wheel drive?

No. These nameplates include different driveline and body configurations. Read the chassis and model plate, auction sheet and physical 4WD hardware on the exact vehicle.

Is an auction grade enough to judge a 4×4?

No. Grade is a useful starting signal. Frame corrosion, underbody repairs, drivetrain operation, document identity and independent inspection determine the real condition tier.

What moves Japanese 4×4 value most?

Factory specification, originality, documented mileage, complete service and ownership history, structural condition and the quality of any modifications form the value ladder. This hub gives no fixed prices.

Is Mirai’s Auction Portal a public inventory list?

No. Mirai offers portal access exclusively to customers after inquiry. It covers major Japanese auctions and filters candidates for a U.S. brief; a listing is not Mirai-owned stock or an import approval.

How should I start a U.S. Japanese 4×4 search?

Choose a vehicle use, factory powertrain preference and destination state, then send Mirai your shortlist through WhatsApp. Mirai can prepare a filtered portal search and request the evidence needed for a specific candidate.

How this hub was checked

The shortlist was compared with Mirai’s live model guides and the source list above. A model name or auction listing is never treated as proof of a specific candidate’s factory configuration or U.S. route.

Turn a model preference into a documented 4×4 search

Tell Mirai what the vehicle must do, which U.S. state it is headed to and whether you prefer a factory diesel or gasoline build. We will prepare a customer-only Auction Portal shortlist and the evidence questions for each lot.
