U.S. Kei Truck Buyer Guide

Do kei trucks have AC, power steering and airbags?

Do kei trucks have AC? Many grades do, but an old kei truck’s dashboard and auction sheet—not its model name—establish whether air conditioning is fitted and working. Power steering, airbags and ABS vary just as much by era and trim.

Do kei trucks have AC by year and grade?

Yes, many do; no, it is not universal. Honda’s 2007 Acty period equipment chart shows air conditioning, EPS, airbags and ABS varying by package. Modern March 2026 Hijet and December 2025 Carry tables also separate grades. For a 25-year-old U.S.-eligible truck, request a clear dash photo, engine-side compressor photo where accessible and a running A/C temperature check.

Heat and demisting matter as much as cold air. Inspect blower speeds, heater core leakage, wiper operation and the windshield seal. An aftermarket A/C retrofit may require Japan-specific brackets, condenser space, plumbing and a licensed refrigerant service; do not quote a generic kit price as an installed cost.

Do kei trucks have power steering, airbags and ABS?

Electric power steering makes parking easier on some grades; other trucks retain manual steering. An airbag word on a steering wheel or an ABS lamp can indicate equipment, but verify the period catalog and warning-lamp self-test. A warning lamp that stays on is a fault, not simply an absent option. Central locking and power windows also vary.

The auction sheet may abbreviate A/C or safety options. Ask for evidence before bidding, especially where equipment affects a U.S. insurance quote. The insurance guide covers how to describe the imported vehicle; the reliability guide covers inspection beyond cabin switches.

What the 2025 Japanese safety test does and does not show

Japan’s NASVA conducted a special 2025 two-seat assessment of the current Hijet Truck. It reports Level 5 of 5 on the specified pedestrian braking and pedal-misapplication tests, and Level 1 of 5 for the full-frontal driver crash test. The program explains that its two-seat tests do not yield the usual overall score. Those outcomes concern the tested modern vehicle; they cannot be transferred to a 1998 Acty or treated as a U.S. FMVSS certificate.

Cab-over packaging gives limited front crush space compared with many modern passenger vehicles. Match speed, route and occupant expectations to the actual truck. For broad models and use cases, browse the kei truck buying hub.

Plan an equipment check

Choose a model, era and feature. The result lists proof to request rather than pretending every grade has it.

Why working equipment matters more than the spec sheet

Factory-documented A/C, EPS or airbag equipment may matter to a buyer, but each item needs an operation check. A clean grade with dead A/C or warning lamps deserves a different repair budget than a functioning example.

Find trucks with working A/C in the Mirai Auction Portal

An auction filter for “A/C” can narrow the field, but a ticked option does not prove the compressor cools. Mirai customers can use our Auction Portal across major Japanese auctions to screen model, build date, grade and declared equipment for a U.S. brief. We then ask for the dash, warning-lamp and operating evidence on the promising trucks. Tell us which comfort or safety features are essential so we do not prioritize a tidy-looking unit with the wrong specification.

Frequently asked questions

Do kei trucks have air conditioning?

Yes. Many grades have factory A/C, but older low trims may not. Check the period catalog and actual cooling operation.

Do kei trucks have heat?

Generally yes. Most enclosed trucks have a heater and defroster, but condition varies. Test blower speeds and windshield demisting on the candidate.

Do kei trucks have power steering?

Yes. Some grades have EPS, while others retain manual steering. Honda’s period equipment chart shows the difference.

Do kei trucks have airbags?

Yes. Many later grades include them, but early imports and low trims vary. Check the catalog and warning-lamp sequence.

Do kei trucks have ABS?

Yes. Some grades, including current catalog trucks, have ABS. Verify the grade and warning-lamp self-test.

Do kei trucks have a radio or CD player?

Sometimes a basic radio; rarely a CD player. Audio depends on the grade: Suzuki’s current Carry list (December 2025) fits an AM/FM radio only on KC grades, leaves the others audio-less and lists no CD player. Japanese FM stations broadcast mainly on 76–90 MHz, while U.S. stations use 88.1–107.9 MHz, so a Japanese-market radio picks up few U.S. FM stations. Budget for a U.S. head unit.

Do kei trucks have cruise control?

No, as a rule. Kei trucks are built for short, low-speed work, and Suzuki’s current Carry equipment list (December 2025) shows no cruise control on any grade. If a listing claims it, treat it as an aftermarket add-on and ask for photos of the switch and wiring.

Do kei trucks have a catalytic converter?

Usually, but confirm it on the actual truck with an underside photo of the exhaust. Do not remove it: removing or defeating emission controls is tampering under Clean Air Act section 203(a)(3), and EPA’s import route for older vehicles depends on the original engine configuration.

Do kei trucks come in diesel?

No. Trucks in the U.S. import window use small gasoline engines of about 660 cc, such as Suzuki’s F6A, Honda’s E07Z and Daihatsu’s EF, and even the current Carry is specified for unleaded regular gasoline. A listing that says diesel is either a mistake or not a kei truck, so check the engine code.

Are kei trucks safe?

No. You should not assume an older import offers modern passenger-car crash protection. NASVA’s 2025 Hijet result applies only to the tested current truck.

Do kei trucks flip easily?

No. A general rollover rate for imported kei trucks is not established here. A narrow, high vehicle still needs careful speed and load management on slopes.

Does the 2025 NASVA result prove U.S. compliance?

No. It is a Japanese assessment of a tested modern Hijet, not an FMVSS certification or an assessment of 1990s imports.

Is aftermarket A/C a cheap fix?

Generally no. A retrofit can need brackets, compressor, condenser, hoses, wiring and specialized refrigerant service. Get a truck-specific installed quote.

Can an auction sheet prove the A/C works?

No. It may record an option, but cooling performance needs an operation test or inspection evidence.
