Automatic kei truck: which models and years qualify?
An automatic kei truck is possible, including some older import-eligible grades and newer Japanese models. The transmission type and 4WD pairing vary by year and grade; a listing that says “AT” is only the start of verification.

Check the exact grade and model year.
Listed in December 2025 Suzuki sheet.
March 2026 grades include 2WD and 4WD.
A model name alone is insufficient.
Automatic kei truck choices by era
Modern Japanese truck lines do not all use the same automatic. Suzuki’s December 2025 Carry sheet lists a 4-speed automatic alongside a 5-speed manual in specified grades. Daihatsu’s March 2026 Hijet catalog lists CVT and 5MT, including 4WD/CVT versions. Subaru’s November 2025 Sambar equipment chart lists CVT variants based on the current truck line. An AGS or automated manual should never be inferred from a generic automatic label.
For U.S.-eligible years, Daihatsu’s February 2000 Hijet archive lists 3AT versions in both 2WD and part-time 4WD. Suzuki’s 11th-generation Carry sheet lists 3AT in 2WD and part-time 4WD; its separate manual high/low configuration is not the automatic. A 2018 Super Carry sheet includes 5AGS, an automated manual, but that launch year is too young for the 2026 25-year exemption. Match every candidate’s chassis and transmission code.
What an automatic changes on the road
An automatic can make stop-start property work easier, but a small engine and limited ratios change how the truck feels on hills or at sustained speed. Fuel use cannot be generalized across 3AT, 4AT and CVT; compare the same generation and test cycle. A 4WD automatic may use different low-speed hardware from the manual grade, so check the 4WD system guide before specifying a low gear.
Transmission choice does not authorize towing. Use the separate towing guide and the exact vehicle document. For highway expectations, read kei truck top speed.

Automatic kei truck for sale: what to test
Request a cold start and a short drive that shows engagement into drive and reverse, upshifts under light throttle, behavior on a grade, and any flare, shudder or delay. Inspect transmission-fluid condition only by the procedure for that transmission; some CVTs have specific fluids and sealed-check procedures. Ask whether 4WD engages with the automatic fitted to that unit.
Automatic examples may command a different auction bid because supply and buyer demand differ, but no fixed premium is dependable. Focus the search on grade, condition and paperwork, then compare kei trucks for sale by actual configuration rather than a transmission keyword.
Find a plausible automatic configuration
Use this to prepare a search brief; the catalog grade and transmission plate establish what the individual truck has.

What makes an automatic worth buying
A verified transmission code, clean shifts and evidence of correct fluid service matter more than a listing’s generic “AT” label. Scarcity can affect bids, but a worn automatic may erase any convenience advantage.
Search automatic kei trucks in the Mirai Auction Portal
Automatic search filters are useful only when they match the period grade. Mirai’s customer-exclusive Auction Portal searches major Japanese auctions by model, transmission, drivetrain, year and condition for U.S. buyers. A listing may abbreviate a torque-converter automatic and a CVT the same way, so request the selector photo and manufacturer grade code before bidding. Tell us whether 4WD is essential; we can keep those combinations separate and screen the eligible build months.

Frequently asked questions
Do kei trucks come in automatic?
Yes. Multiple models offered automatic grades, but availability varies by era and drive configuration. Confirm the exact chassis and grade.
Is every Honda Acty manual?
No. Some period Acty configurations used automatic transmissions. Use the year-specific Honda archive to check the truck in question.
Can an automatic kei truck have 4WD?
Yes. Some configurations pair an automatic with 4WD; current Hijet catalogs show 4WD/CVT grades. Older combinations require a period grade check.
Is AGS the same as a conventional automatic?
No. An automated manual uses a clutch and shift actuator; a conventional automatic uses different hardware. Do not rely on a listing label alone.
Are all new Japanese kei trucks CVT?
No. The December 2025 Suzuki Carry sheet lists 4AT and 5MT, while the March 2026 Hijet catalog includes CVT and 5MT.
Does an automatic lower top speed?
Generally no. Gearing can change cruising behavior, but there is no universal reduction. Compare the same engine and generation.
Does an automatic reduce fuel economy?
Generally no. Some combinations use more fuel, while newer CVTs can differ from old 3AT designs. Compare matched manufacturer grades and test cycles.
Can you daily drive an automatic kei truck?
Generally yes. Daily use requires a lawful route and a truck suited to the traffic conditions. Comfort and sustained-speed reserves remain modest.
How do I inspect an automatic at auction?
Request a drive video showing cold engagement, shifts and reverse, plus any service record. A static auction sheet cannot prove shift quality.
Is an automatic version more expensive?
No. It is not automatically more expensive; scarcity can raise some bids while grade and condition pull others down. Compare complete landed costs.
